Mechanical Engineering

    Biography

Hi, I'm Coleman Bain, a mechanical engineering major in the 2027 Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program (Heath IBEP) at the University of Tennessee.

I have a diverse range of interests that keep me active and constantly learning. These include playing tennis, playing the violin, golfing, and snowboarding. However, my favorite hobby is creating tangible things from ideas. This passion spans various forms such as clay sculptures, Legos, woodworking, and robotics kits. I love every part of the process because it requires creativity and analysis to be an effective designer and problem solver. Whether I'm trying a new sport or tackling an ambitious project, I thrive on pushing myself to learn new things—it’s both rewarding and empowering to accomplish what I once thought was beyond my reach.

The moment I learned about Heath IBEP, I immediately knew it was something I wanted to pursue. My choice of engineering stems from my passion for building and creating. However, I also recognize the importance of business skills in communicating effectively with business professionals in my future career. By broadening my expertise in both engineering and business through Heath IBEP, I aim to facilitate collaboration between these disciplines. My studies will inform my design practices by providing insights into how a design reaches the market and how it can be produced most efficiently for a company.

My current career goal is to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering while gaining research and professional experience in materials and energy fields. Here are some highlights from my recent experiences:

    1. Custom Automated Machines: Over the summer, I worked here where I learned about both the design and manufacturing processes involved with industrial machines.
    1. Hypersonics Team Research: Currently, I'm studying manufacturing methods and properties of carbon-carbon composites with this team.

With a strong interest in sustainable energy technology, my long-term career goal is to research and develop cleaner, more effective methods of energy production along with more efficient energy utilization.
