Biosystems Engineering
Biography
My name is Samantha Exum, and I am currently studying Biosystems Engineering with an Ecological Systems concentration. Additionally, I am pursuing minors in Environmental Engineering, Watersheds, and am also a member of the 2027 Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program (IBEP). I have always been incredibly passionate about outreach and giving back to my community; as such, I lead our chapter of Engineers Without Borders and serve as a mentor through three different engineering programs on campus. These experiences have taught me valuable lessons in leadership, project management, and interpersonal communication.
I became aware of Heath IBEP during my senior year of high school, which ultimately influenced my decision to study engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I believe that every engineer should have a fundamental understanding of the business decisions that drive product markets, subsequently better informing the design process. By collaborating with my business-major peers on interdisciplinary projects, I have developed a lean mindset and systems thinking skills that have enhanced my problem-solving abilities.
Upon completing my undergraduate degree program, I plan to pursue a graduate degree in Water Resources Engineering. I am passionate about sustainability and water quality challenges, and am particularly drawn to environmental data science, hydrologic modeling, and consulting work.
