Biography
My name is Joshua Hyde, a biosystems engineer in the 2027 Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program (Heath IBEP).
I was born and raised in Greeneville, Tennessee, a small-town east of Knoxville settled in the mountains. Growing up in an agricultural community, I developed an appreciation for sustainability and gained a deep understanding of the many environmental challenges we face. My ingenuity from farming and business skills from selling produce have motivated me to make an impact in industry.
My decision to join Heath IBEP stemmed from my passions for the environment and entrepreneurship. Initially, when I first came to UT, I considered having a business minor. However, business and biosystems engineering felt like they were worlds apart. Fortunately, after attending a seminar about Heath IBEP, I realized it was the perfect fit for me.
I joined Heath IBEP because it offered me an incredible opportunity to learn about working in the private sector while gaining skills in entrepreneurship. The program allows me to operate as an engineer alongside businesspeople to understand how economically viable products are made. Although the federal government plays a crucial role in preserving our water, air, and soil, it is often the technologies from the private sector that make significant strides. This intersection of business and environment is exactly where I want to work.
After finishing my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in engineering to broaden my skill set for industry applications. Eventually, I aspire to work in research and development for a biotechnology company to gain professional experience. Ultimately, my goal is to own my own company that either has its own product or provides consulting services to other biotech companies.
