Civil Engineering
Biography
I am Jordyn Forbes and am majoring in Civil Engineering. I am in the 2026 Cohort of the Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program (Heath IBEP). I have always been categorized as a shy girl, and it was a label that stuck with me throughout my life. However, as I've grown older, I've learned to embrace this part of my personality because I believe it has taught me valuable skills and shaped the way I view the world. In my personal experiences, I've come to appreciate that the quiet friend often becomes the go-to person for advice due to their strong listening and problems-solving skills. The quiet kid in class can excel because they're conscientious and strive to get things right the first time. Quiet individuals tend to be more in touch with their emotions, making them more empathetic, and they are often observant of the little details, sparking curiosity in everything around them. Now that I am in college, I continue to rely on these skills in my everyday life because of how practical and beneficial they are.
During my high school marketing class, I had a project early in the school year. After presenting it, my teacher asked if I had ever considered pursuing an engineering degree because she thought I would enjoy it based on what I had said in my presentation. Her recommendation prompted me to explore the field of engineering and its various disciplines. By the end of the year, I found myself torn because I enjoyed my marketing class and was certain about pursuing that degree, but my research into engineering had piqued my interest in a way I hadn't expected. When college applications started, I decided to pursue engineering. When I learned about the Heath IBEP program, I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone and provide me with a firsthand view of the intersection between engineering and business. The program's strategies and networking opportunities will give me an edge and be vital to my future success.
With a civil engineering degree, my current aspiration is to enter a career that focuses more on the structural and environmental aspects of the industry. I also plan to leverage the knowledge I gain from Heath IBEP to, hopefully, own my own firm one day. This firm would prioritize using innovative and sustainable designs and actively engage in community outreach. I believe it's important to share success and reinvest in the community.
