Biography

Hello, my name is Elsie Whitmer, and I am a sophomore at the University of Tennessee studying biomedical engineering on the pre-medicine track with a concentration in business. I am a driven and hardworking individual who values authenticity, passion for making a difference, and teamwork. I show leadership through skills such as organization, effective communication, and critical thinking. Something that centers me as a person is giving back to my community. I love to use the education, time, and talents that I have been fortunate enough to have to help those who need it most. I believe that staying true these values have made me a better leader and a better person overall. My success stems from all of the hard work and passion that I put into each thing I do, but it would not be possible without the support of

I joined the Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program to develop my skills as a cross-functional leader and become an invaluable member of any team that I may join in the future. I am always looking for new ways to learn and grow as both a person and a student.  Being able to do this outside of the classroom through projects and meetings are things that really drew me to the Heath IBEP.

As I continue my education, every day expands my interest in the field of medicine. Right now, I would love to have an internship that would expose me to the world of medicine. My main interest is in surgery and medical devices. Medical device design is something that fascinates me, and I love to learn how they work and how they can be effective in physicians’ practice. I would love to work in this area whether it be in the field or in research. After I graduate, I want to pursue medicine as a career. I specifically want to be a research-based surgeon who implements medical devices into innovative surgeries.
