Biography

My name is Alexander Horton, and I am a mechanical engineer with a focus on product design and systems analysis. Growing up, I had a strong interest in robotics and became extremely involved throughout middle and high school. As I continue through college, I have continued this interest through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers design team. This experience has strengthened my knowledge of robotics, machine design, and teamwork. I pride myself in my ability to take a step back to look at the bigger picture and fully understand a project or system. I believe that the most important thing to a successful career in engineering is communication. The thing that makes a great engineer stand out from a good one is the ability to understand the context of the project, and how to communicate it to other people I may be working with. IBEP is the epitome of this concept, teaching us how to work closely with business students to collaborate better on projects and designs. I joined IBEP to become better acquainted with the business side of engineering and get an exposure to entrepreneurship. Through our coursework I have gained many skills regarding systems thinking and analysis and have been able to better understand and develop myself and my own professional goals. As I move into Industry, I hope to find a career within one of my interests which include additive manufacturing systems, electric vehicles, and product design. I value my creative thinking and design skills, but also value my skills in management and leadership positions. Coming out of college I hope to move into one of these industries, but one day hope to have my own startup engineering company that will have an emphasis on environmental sustainability, and ethical business practices.
