Management & Finance
Biography
My name is Alex Carlson, and I am currently studying management and finance at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT). Originally from Chicago’s northwest suburbs, I have worked throughout my academic and professional career to develop leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills. I thrive in collaborative environments, which is why I am excited to be part of the 2028 Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program cohort.
Before attending UT, I was deeply involved in my high school’s band program. During my senior year, I had the honor of serving as one of three Drum Majors for the marching band. Additionally, I played alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones while leading the symphonic band’s saxophone section. These experiences gave me early exposure to team leadership, managing responsibilities, and fostering relationships. I also co-founded my school district’s chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society—a project that taught me the importance of vision, organization, and perseverance in bringing new ideas to life. These formative experiences ignited my passion for leadership and reinforced my commitment to service, initiative, and continuous learning.
At UT, I have continued to pursue opportunities for professional growth. I currently serve as the Lead Membership Chair for the Management Society, where I oversee membership data, recruitment initiatives, and communication with members. Additionally, I am a proud brother of Alpha Kappa Psi, a professional business fraternity that has provided me with a strong network of peers and valuable professional development opportunities.
I joined Heath IBEP for several reasons. While exploring my academic path, I recognized that having a foundational understanding of engineering principles—and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers—would be critical to achieving success in industries like automotive or consulting. During my freshman year, I participated in the Venture Living Learning Community for business students and appreciated the benefits of a cohort-style program. Heath IBEP offers an even greater opportunity to expand my knowledge by working alongside peers from diverse disciplines while developing problem-solving skills essential for thriving in an evolving market.
My short-term professional goal is to secure an internship in finance or management, with a particular interest in working within the automotive or consulting industries. Ultimately, I aspire to build a career that blends my business expertise with industries that value innovation, teamwork, and forward-thinking leadership.
