Thomas Ivey

Economics

    Biography

My name is Thomas Ivey, and I am a sophomore at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, studying Economics.

I enjoy learning new things, whether it be theology, religion, economics, politics, philosophy, history, or even advances in nuclear fusion. Understanding how and why something works or functions the way it does fascinates me—especially when it involves people. I am reliable and hard-working and strive to execute any task given to me effectively, whether in a supportive or leadership role. My analytical nature helps me make the most informed decisions possible.

I joined Heath IBEP for three main reasons:

    1. Diverse Problem-Solving Methods: I enjoy learning about different ways of viewing the world and solving its problems/opportunities. Heath IBEP provides this by exposing me to engineering and surrounding me with engineering students.
    2. Executive Mentoring: The opportunity for executive mentoring allows me to learn from my mentor’s successes and failures, his taken and missed opportunities, and his unique perspective on life.
    3. Teamwork Development: This program builds teamwork skills essential for personal growth. As someone who has often been a loner, this program forces me to learn how to work efficiently within a team.

My immediate professional goals include working with banks, consulting firms, or think tanks to gain hands-on experience in economics. Given that the field of economics is broad, I aim to gather as much experience as possible across these fields to understand how economics applies outside the classroom. Roles that currently interest me include:

    • Analyst
    • Consultant
    • Researcher

By helping others make informed decisions based on economic analysis and research through jobs and internships, I hope to ultimately achieve my career goal of becoming an economist who provides insights enabling markets to flourish.
