The program is based on a cohort structure, meaning students from engineering and business attend several classes and work jointly on projects together from sophomore year through graduation. Students take the following courses for a total of 12 additional hours for both engineering and business majors:
- Haslam Leaders Series
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving I and II (EF 203 and 303)
- Creating Synergies in Business and Engineering Collaborations
- CAPSTONE Engineering Senior Design I & II (EF 437 & EF 438) —see Senior Design below for details.
In addition, engineering students in the program will take:
- Intro to Entrepreneurship (ENT 350)

*Please be aware that BUAD 200 should not be taken during your Freshman Year as it is a requirement of the Heath IBEP curriculum. If you have already taken the course, you will be required to retake it as a cohort.
Senior Design
The program provides a critical interdisciplinary learning opportunity for students to work on actual industry projects under the direction of faculty and sponsor-company mentors. Students will design, build, and test a real product or system while learning teamwork skills and how to complete projects on time and within budget. This honors-level capstone course sequence ensures groups solve a real-world problem at the intersection of business and engineering and seals the program’s focus on real-world expertise. Co-Curriculars
Students are also expected to participate in co-curricular activities throughout their time in the program. These activities include attending sessions with external speakers from executive leadership, manufacturing site visits, mentoring sessions, and group discussions.
*Business students are not required to take additional math or science courses.
Alternate Semester Options
Students may participate in semesters abroad and engineering co-ops during the Sophomore Spring and/or Junior Fall. However, approval from the director is required at least 3 months before the semester begins.
